Historical seismograms: Preserving an endangered species
نویسنده
چکیده
The youth of seismology as a science, compared to the typical duration of seismic cycles, results in a relative scarcity of records of large earthquakes available for processing by modern analytical techniques, which in turn makes archived datasets of historical seismograms extremely valuable in order to enhance our understanding of the occurrence of large, destructive earthquakes. Unfortunately, the value of these datasets is not always perceived adequately by decision-making administrators, which has resulted in the destruction (or last-minute salvage) of irreplaceable datasets. We present a quick review of the nature of the datasets of seismological archives, and of specific algorithms allowing their use for the modern retrieval of the source characteristics of the relevant earthquakes. We then describe protocols for the transfer of analog datasets to digital support, including by contact-less photography when the poor physical state of the records prevents the use of mechanical

Historical seismograms for unravelling a mysterious earthquake: The 1907 Sumatra Earthquake
S U M M A R Y History of instrumental seismology is short. Seismograms are available only for a little more than 100 years; high-quality seismograms are available only for the last 50 years and the seismological database is very limited in time. To extend the database, seismograms of old events are of vital importance. Many unusual earthquakes are known to have occurred, but their seismological...
متن کاملAn interactive program on digitizing historical seismograms
Retrieving information from analog seismograms is of great importance since they are considered as the unique sources that provide quantitative information of historical earthquakes. We present an algorithm for automatic digitization of the seismograms as an inversion problem that forms an interactive program using Matlab GUI. The program integrates automatic digitization with manual digitizati...
متن کاملA Current Perspective on the Historical Geographic Distribution of the Endangered Muriquis (Brachyteles spp.): Implications for Conservation
The muriqui (Brachyteles spp.), endemic to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, is the largest primate in South America and is endangered, mainly due to habitat loss. Its distribution limits are still uncertain and need to be resolved in order to determine their true conservation status. Species distribution modeling (SDM) has been used to estimate potential species distributions, even when informati...
متن کاملAn Introduction on the Endangered Medicinal Species of Mountain’s Kelavs (Kelussia Odoratissima Mozaff.) in Central Zagros in Kohgiluyeh Region, Iran
Medicinal species of mountain’s kelavs, scientifically named (kelussia odoratissmia Mozaffar.) is an endemic species in Iran. Kelussia odoratissima is a perennial species and belongs to the umbelliferae. From the ancient times, the local and nomad societies had believed that the species traditionally have anti-ache, anti-inflation and anti-cough effects. Seed and root of this species are boiled...

The present study explored the embryonic and larval development of an endangered fish species Nandus nandus and resolved larval growth performances with the dietary supplementation of different types of lipids. Fertilized eggs were collected from fiber glass tanks immediately after spontaneous spawning of N. nandus, which were fed with a 1% phospholipid (squid meal) supplemented diet for 3 mont...
